Rice and idly are the two main dishes of the south Indian cuisine. Both of these dishes can be paired up with many side dishes. One of the most popular side dishes to be served along with them is Tovve. Tovve is a normal dal recipe like in any other state. The only difference in cooking it is that lemon juice is added to it.
To make the dish, first ghee is heated in a pan. Cumin seeds, tomatoes, ginger, onion and green chilli are added to it. Once the ingredients start turning a little brown, mashed lentils are added to it. Lentils can be mashed after boiling. Water is added to the pot. After the Tovve is cooked properly, lemon juice and salt to taste are added to it. The dish is served hot.
